The Prince and the Wolf: Latour and Harman at the...
Bruno Latour: You are right. You are perfectly right that it is slightly disingenuous to call description the most difficult task of metaphysics...But I would stick to the word, because description is the most difficult thing to do, and precisely because it requires all of those skills, precisely because it requires so much metaphysics just to find the right description [...] So I still stick to the idea that even though I agree that my vocabulary is slightly disingenuous, and was troubling to students of information systems, if memory serves, it is important not to call theory plus description. The whole theory should be the servant, the ancillary of a description of some sort. Because if not, then we will again be back in the traditional social sciences. So I agree that it´s disingenuous, and that not everything can be putative. But it´s description in the actor-network sense of the word, and that includes the whole metaphysics.
Chirsanthi Avgerou: Desn´t that at least require revealing your starting point?
Bruno Latour: Oh, I do. That is why the Pasteur book has two parts; this is why Aramis is made of two parts. I´ve never hidden that. What I´ve hidden is this other... what did you call that, the second Latour?
Graham Harman: The later Latour... [LAUGHTER]
Bruno Latour: I agree. Here I have been hiding myself in a very unfair way. But I´ve always said that to do good description you need to do good metaphysics. That´s why this guy here [POINTS TO GRAHAM HARMAN] is talking seriously the metaphysics but not the description. [LAUGHTER]

Ray Brassier: "speculative realist movement"
KRONOS: How would you describe your 'love-affair' with the speculative realists movement?
Ray Brassier: The ‘speculative realist movement’ exists only in the imaginations of a group of bloggers promoting an agenda for which I have no sympathy whatsoever: actor-network theory spiced with pan-psychist metaphysics and morsels of process philosophy. I don’t believe the internet is an appropriate medium for serious philosophical debate; nor do I believe it is acceptable to try to concoct a philosophical movement online by using blogs to exploit the misguided enthusiasm of impressionable graduate students. I agree with Deleuze’s remark that ultimately the most basic task of philosophy is to impede stupidity, so I see little philosophical merit in a ‘movement’ whose most signal achievement thus far is to have generated an online orgy of stupidity.
